يارُبَّAh, many a مَصلوبٍcrucified man عَلَىupon جِذْعٍa tree trunk لهُhe has
يارُبَّ مَصلوبٍ عَلَى جِذْعٍ لهُ
شَبَهُthe likeness of المحبِّthe lover إِذاwhen رأَىhe sees أَحبابَهُhis loved ones
شَبَهُ المحبِّ إِذا رأَى أَحبابَهُ
Ah, many a man crucified upon a tree trunk has
The likeness of a lover when he sees his loved ones,
أَوْor كالطَّروبِlike the enraptured one بمجلسٍat a gathering غنّىsang لهُfor him
أَوْ كالطَّروبِ بمجلسٍ غنّى لهُ
صوتٌa voice فَمَزَّقَso he tore بِاليَدَيْنِwith both hands ثيابَهُhis clothes
صوتٌ فَمَزَّقَ بِاليَدَيْنِ ثيابَهُ
Or is like one enraptured at a gathering, for whom
A voice sang, so he tore his clothes with both hands.
