فالنَّايُfor the reed flute يُبديgives voice to أَنيناًa moan
فالنَّايُ يُبدي أَنيناً
يُشجيstirs sorrow وللعُودِand for the oud ضَرْبُstrumming
يُشجي وللعُودِ ضَرْبُ
For the reed flute gives forth a moan
For the reed flute voices a moan
that stirs the heart, while the oud is struck.
That stirs sorrow, while the oud is strummed.
وأَعينُand the eyes الغيثِof the rain تجريflow

لَها انهمالٌ وسَكْبُ
And the eyes of the graceful maidens flow;
And the eyes of the rain flow;
theirs is a streaming, a pouring forth.
They stream and pour forth.
وَماand no عَلَيناupon us جُناحٌsin
وَما عَلَينا جُناحٌ
فيماin what فَعَلْناwe have done وعَتْبُand reproach

No sin lies upon us
And no sin rests upon us
for what we have done, nor any reproach.
For what we have done, nor any reproach.
