قُوميrise امْزُجِيmix الكأْسَthe cup بِاللجَيْنِwith silver
وَاحْتَمِلِيand carry الكأْسَthe cup بِاليَدَيْنِwith both hands
Rise—mix the wine with silver-bright water,
Rise, mix the cup with silver,
and bear the cup in both your hands.
And carry the cup in both hands.
وَاغْتَنمِيand seize غَفْلَةَthe inattention الليالِيof the nights
فَرُبَّماfor perhaps أَيْقَظَتْthey roused لِبَيْنِto parting
Seize the nights while they are heedless,
And take advantage of the nights’ inattention,
for they may awaken us to parting.
For they may rouse us to parting.
فَقَدْfor indeed لَعَمْريby my life أَقَرَّgladdened مِنِّيof mine
هِلالُthe crescent شَوَّالof Shawwal كُلَّevery عَيْنِeye
For, by my life, it gladdened—more than mine—
For indeed, by my life, what has gladdened
every eye, that crescent of Shawwal.
Every eye of mine is the crescent of Shawwal.

Does she who wears anklets behold it—
Does the woman with anklets see it
its likeness, her anklet of silver?
As resembling her silver anklet?
