ظَلَمَنيhe wronged me والظُّلْمُand wrongdoing مِنْfrom عِنْدِهِhim
وَجازَand exceeded فيin الظُّلْمِwrongdoing مَدىthe extent of حَدِّهِits limit
He wronged me—and wrongdoing comes from him—
He wronged me, and the wrong was from him,
and in wrongdoing went beyond its furthest limit:
And he exceeded the limit in that wrong.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle غَداbecame طَرْفيmy eye لهُfor him ناظِراًgazing
لَمَّاwhen رأىhe saw قَلْبيَmy heart مِنْamong جُنْدِهِhis troops
a gazelle whom my eye began to watch,
A gazelle, whose glance became mine,
when he saw my heart among his troops.
When he saw that my heart was his soldier.
فَدَيْتُI would ransom مَنْthe one صَبْريmy endurance عَلىof جَوْرِهِhis cruelty
أَحْسَنُbetter مِنْthan صَبْريmy endurance عَلىof فَقْدِهِhis loss
I would ransom him: my endurance of his cruelty
I ransomed the one who had patience over his tyranny,
is better than my endurance of his loss.
Better than my patience over losing him.
انْظُرْlook إِلَيْهِat him وَإِلىand at خَدِّهِhis cheek
والعارِضِand the cheek-down المُثْبَتِrooted فيin خَدِّهِhis cheek
Look at him and at his cheek,
Look at him and his cheek,
and the down rooted in his cheek.
And the moles settled on his cheek.
كَأَنَّهُas though it were فَجْرُa dawn وِصالٍof union بَداappeared
تَحْتَbeneath ظَلامٍdarkness مِنْfrom دُجىthe deep gloom of صَدِّهِhis rejection
As though it were a dawn of union appearing
It is as if it is the dawn of union that appeared,
beneath the darkness of his rejection's night.
Under darkness from the intensity of its veil.
تَحْسُدُهُenvies him الشَّمسُthe sun عَلىfor حُسْنِهِhis beauty
كماjust as يَغارُis jealous الغُصْنُthe bough مِنْof قَدِّهِhis stature
The sun envies him for his beauty,
The sun envies him for his beauty,
just as the bough is jealous of his stature.
Like a branch envies its twigs.
