I bade her farewell, with longing's blaze in my liver,

while separation drove soul and body apart—

the farewell of two lovers, whose leave-taking was possible

only through an eye's glances or a hand's fingertips.

She feared the eyes of tale-bearers and turned away,

biting, in her anger, her jujube lips with hailstone teeth.

And the eye's first acquaintance, the day she went away,

with tears was the heart's last acquaintance with fortitude.
