ولَمَّاand when أُنِيخَتْwere made to kneel لِلْفِراقِfor parting رَكائِبيmy riding camels
لَدىat مأتَمِmourning gathering التَّوديعِfarewell وَهْوَwhile it was لَهاfor them عُرْسُa wedding
And when my riding camels were made to kneel for parting,
At farewell’s mourning gathering—though for them it was a wedding—
وَوَدَّعتُand I bade farewell to قَلْبيmy heart والحَبيبَand the beloved كليْهِماboth of them
فَفَارَقَناso left us سَعْدٌgood fortune وقَابَلَناand met us نَحْسُill fortune
And I bade farewell to both my heart and my beloved,
Good fortune left us, and ill fortune met us.
تَنَفَّسَhe sighed حتَّىuntil قُلْتُI said قَدْalready غاضَebbed away قَلْبُهُhis heart
وَراجَعَand he resumed حَتَّىuntil قُلْتُI said قَدْalready فاضَتِdeparted النَّفسُthe soul
He sighed until I said, “His heart has ebbed away,”
And sighed again until I said, “His soul has departed.”
