ومالَand he inclined فيin أَمْريmy affair إِلىtoward الغَدْرِtreachery
He tormented me with disdain and pride;
He tormented me with haughtiness and pride,
Yet in my plight I have no inclination toward betrayal.
And leaned toward treachery in his dealings with me.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle مِنَamong الإِنْسِhumankind ولَكِنَّهُbut he
قَدْindeed فاقَhe surpassed فيin الحُسنِbeauty عَلىabove البَدْرِthe full moon
A gazelle from among humankind—yet he
A gazelle among humankind, yet he
Has surpassed the full moon in beauty.
Has surpassed the full moon in beauty.
فِعالهُhis deeds أَسْمَحُmore generous مِنْthan صَدِّهِhis rebuff
وَوَجْهُهُand his face أَحْسَنُmore beautiful مِنْthan عُذْرِيmy excuse
His conduct is more gracious than his rebuff,
His deeds are more generous than his rebuff,
And his face is fairer than my excuse.
And his face is fairer than my excuse.
