بِنَفْسِيَwith my life مَنْthe one whom نَفْسيmy life تَقِلُّis too little لَهُfor him فِدىًas ransom
وإِنْand even though لَمْdid not تَنَلْattain مِنْfrom وَصْلِهِunion with him ماwhat تَمَنَّتِit desired
My life for him, for whom my life is too small a ransom,
even though my soul did not gain from union with him what it desired.
تَزَيَّنَتِadorned itself الدُّنياthe world بِهِwith him ثُمَّthen أَقْبَلَتْit drew near
فَلَمَّاbut when أَدالَhe replaced الوَصلَunion بِالهَجرِwith estrangement وَلَّتِit turned away
The world adorned itself with him, then drew near;
but when he replaced union with estrangement, it turned away.
كأنَّas though لَياليthe nights الوَصْلِof union كانَتْwere غَمامَةًa cloud
فَلَمَّاand when رَجَوْتُI hoped for الوَصْلَunion مِنْهاfrom it تَخَلَّتِit dispersed
It was as though the nights of union were a cloud;
and when I hoped for union from it, it dispersed.
