كأَنَّas though الهِلالَthe crescent moon إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle بَدَاappears
وَأَيْديand the hands المِحاقِthe moon’s waning بِهِupon it تَمْحَقُwear away
It is as though the crescent, when it appears,
While the hands of waning wear it away,
عَلِيلٌa sick man عَلَىon فَرْشِهِhis bed مُدْنَفٌgravely ill
وكلُّand all النُّجُومِthe stars بِهِaround him تُحْدِقُgather round
Were a sick man on his bed, gravely ill,
With all the stars surrounding him;
فَهَذاكَfor that one يَتْلَفُis dying مِنْfrom عِلَّةٍan illness
وَهاتِيكَand those وَجْداًwith longing بِهِfor him تَخْفُقُthrob
For that one is dying of an illness,
And those throb with longing for him.
