ساعٍone moving about بِكَأْسٍwith a cup بينamong نُدْماءِdrinking companions
كالغُصنِlike the bough المعصَّرِsqueezed; pressed الماءِthe water
One passing with a cup among drinking companions,
A cupbearer among friends
Like a bough with its moisture squeezed out.
Like a squeezed branch of water
أَغارُI grow jealous منof وقْفَتِهِhis pause كلَّماwhenever
قالhe said لِحاسيto the sipper of الكأْسِthe cup مَوْلائيmy lord
I grow jealous of his pausing whenever
I envy his standing whenever
He says to the one sipping the cup, “My lord.”
He says to the cup-bearer, my lord
حَتَّىso much so that لقدindeed صارواthey became وَهُمْwhile they are إِخْوتيmy brothers
مِنْbecause of شِدَّةِthe intensity of الغَيْرَةِjealousy أَعْدائيmy enemies
So much so that they have become, though they are my brothers,
To the point where they, though my brethren
Through the intensity of jealousy, my enemies.
Have become, from an excess of envy, my enemies
