وَلَمَّاand when غَداbecame وَرْدُroses الخُدُودِthe cheeks بَنَفْسَجاًviolets
وَرَاحَand began عَقِيقُcarnelian الخَدِّthe cheek فيin الدَّمْعِthe tears يَنْهَمِيto stream
And when the roses of the cheeks became violets,
When the cheeks' roses turned violet
and the cheek's carnelian began streaming in tears,
And the tears made the ruby lips grow pale
تَصَدَّتْshe came forward لَناto us والبَيْنُand parting عَنَّاfrom us يَصُدُّهاheld her back
بِإِقْبالِwith the welcome ودٍّof love دُونَrather than إِعْراضِthe aversion لُوَّمِof reproachers
she came forward to us, though parting held her back from us,
She turned to face us, though estrangement stood between us
with love's welcome, not the aversion of reproachers.
With affection, not with rejection or blame
وَقَدْand already حُلِّيَتْwere adorned أَجْفانُهاher eyelids مِنْwith دُمُوعِهاher tears
كَماjust as حُلِّيَتْwas adorned لَيْلاًat night سَمَاءٌa sky بِأَنْجُمِwith stars
And her eyelids had been adorned with her tears,
Her eyelids were adorned with her tears
as the sky is adorned at night with stars.
As the night sky is adorned with stars
فَقُلْتُso I said لأَصْحابٍto companions عَلَيَّto me أَعِزَّةٍdear
يَعِزُّis grievous عَلَيْناto us مَاwhat بِكُمْafflicts you مِنْof تَأَلُّمِsuffering
So I said to companions dear to me:
I said to dear friends who cared for me
The suffering you endure weighs heavily on us.
It pains us to see you in such distress
خُذُواtake vengeance بِدَميfor my blood ذَاتَthe woman with الوِشَاحِthe sash فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
رَأَيْتُI saw بِعَيْنِيwith my own eye فيon أَنامِلِهاher fingertips دَمِيmy blood
Avenge my blood on the woman with the sash, for I
Take my blood, O you in the cloak
have seen with my own eyes my blood on her fingertips.
For I saw my blood on her fingers
