بِخلوقِهِ مِنْها عَلَى الخَدِّ
And it is as though the camphor of tears, as it flowed
And as if camphor tears had flowed
with its saffron perfume from her onto the cheek,
Down his cheek, pearls and rubies
دُرٌّpearls وَياقُوتٌand rubies تَساقَطَfell بَيْنَهُamong them

في نَثْرِهِ كُحْلٌ مِنَ النَّدِّ
were pearls and rubies, among which fell,
Falling between in drops
as they scattered, kohl of fragrant incense.
Like kohl from an eye-powder container.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though نَظَمَتْshe strung دُمُوعtears جُفُونِهاher eyelids

في نَحْرِها بَدَلا مِنَ العِقْدِ
And as though she had strung the tears of her eyelids
As though her eyelids' tears
at her throat in place of the necklace.
Were strung around her throat in place of a necklace.

مَيْتاً لَلَبَّاها مِنَ اللحْدِ
If, with the beauty of her speech, she called
If she called to the dead with her eloquence
a dead man, he would surely answer her from the grave.
He would answer her from the grave.
