وَشَمْسِ لَيْلٍ طَرَقْتُها فبدا

وَشَمْسِ لَيْلٍ طَرَقْتُها فبدا

منها صُدودٌ ما كنْتُ أَحْسبُهُ

منها صُدودٌ ما كنْتُ أَحْسبُهُ

And I visited a sun of night; then there appeared

And a night sun I knocked on

From her a rebuff I had not expected.

It revealed rejections I never expected

تقولُ مَنْ ذا فَلَسْتُ أَعرِفُهُ

تقولُ مَنْ ذا فَلَسْتُ أَعرِفُهُ

يأْلفُهُ القَلْبُ حَيْثُ أَطلبُهُ

يأْلفُهُ القَلْبُ حَيْثُ أَطلبُهُ

She says, “Who is this? For I do not know him.”

It says who's this I do not recognize

The heart is familiar with him where I seek him.

The heart meets it wherever I seek it
