ياO غائِباًabsent one لمhas not يَغِبْdeparted هَواهُlove for him
يا غائِباً لم يَغِبْ هَواهُ
عنْfrom قلبِthe heart of صَبٍّa passionate lover بهbecause of him عَميدِstricken with love
عنْ قلبِ صَبٍّ به عَميدِ
O absent one, love for you has not departed
O absent one whose love
from the heart of a lover sick with love for you.
Has not been absent from the heart of a steadfast lover
قدindeed صارَhas become يومُthe day of الفِراقِparting عنديto me
قد صارَ يومُ الفِراقِ عندي
أَظلمَdarker منْthan ظُلمَةِthe darkness of الصُّدودِrejection
أَظلمَ منْ ظُلمَةِ الصُّدودِ
The day of parting has become, to me,
The day we parted has become to me
darker than the darkness of rejection.
Darker than the darkness of estrangement
وكلُّand every أُنْسٍcompanionship تَغيبُyou are absent عنهُfrom it
وكلُّ أُنْسٍ تَغيبُ عنهُ
فإِنَّهُso indeed it is وحشةُthe desolation of الجُحودِdenial
فإِنَّهُ وحشةُ الجُحودِ
And all companionship from which you are absent
And all company from which you are absent
is the desolation of denial.
Is but the loneliness of rejection
لَوْif فَجَعَstruck with grief البَيْنُparting قلبَthe heart of صَبٍّa passionate lover
لَوْ فَجَعَ البَيْنُ قلبَ صَبٍّ
ذابَit would melt ولوْand even if كانَit were مِنْof حَديدِiron
ذابَ ولوْ كانَ مِنْ حَديدِ
If parting were to strike a lover's heart with grief,
If separation were to grieve the heart of a steadfast lover
it would melt, even if it were made of iron.
