لَوْif قِيلَit were said هَلْis there رَجُلٌa man طالَتْhas lasted long بَلِيَّتُهُhis affliction
لاسْتَعْبَرَتْwould well with tears مُقْلَتِيmy eye حَتَّىuntil أَقولَI say أَناI
If it were asked, “Is there a man whose affliction has lasted long?”
If it were asked, “Is there a man whose affliction has long endured?”
my eye would well with tears until I said, “I.”
My eye would well with tears until I said, “I am he.”
وَلَوْand if قَضىdied حَزَناًof sorrow مُسْتَهْتَرٌbesotted with love دَنِفٌwasted by lovesickness
لَكُنْتُI would be أَوَّلَthe first مَحْزُونٍgrief-stricken person قَضىdied حَزَناof sorrow
And if a passion-maddened, lovesick man could die of grief,
And if a besotted, lovesick man were to die of sorrow,
I would be the first grief-stricken man to die of sorrow.
I would be the first grief-stricken man to die of sorrow.
هذاthis كِتابُthe letter of فَتَىًa youth طالَتْhas lasted long صَبَابَتُهُhis yearning
مُكَبَّلٍshackled فيin الهَوىlove وَقْفٍgiven over لِكُلِّto every ضَنىwasting affliction
This is the letter of a youth whose ardent longing has lasted long—
This is the letter of a youth whose yearning has long endured,
fettered by love, forever given over to every wasting affliction.
Shackled in love, given over to every wasting affliction.
