يَاO مَنْyou who نَفَتْbanished عَنِّيfrom me لَذِيذَsweet رُقَادِيmy sleep
مَالِيwhat is it with me? وَمَالَكِand what is it with you? قَدْindeed أَطَلْتِyou prolonged سُهادِيmy sleeplessness
O you who drove my sweet sleep away from me,
What have I to do with you? You have prolonged my sleeplessness.
فَبِأَيِّso for what ذَنْبٍsin أَمْor بِأَيَّةِunder what حَالَةٍcircumstance
أَبْعَدْتِنيyou banished me وَلَقَدْand indeed سَكَنْتِyou inhabited فُؤَاديmy heart
For what sin, then, or under what circumstance
Have you banished me, though you have dwelt in my heart?
وَصَدَدْتِand you turned away عَنِّيfrom me حِينَwhen قَدْalready مَلَكَpossessed الهَوىlove
رُوحيmy soul وَقَلْبِيand my heart وَالحَشاand the inward parts وَقِياديand my reins
And you turned away from me when love had already claimed
My soul, my heart, my inward parts, and my reins.
مَلَكَتْseized لِحَاظُكَyour glances مُهْجَتِيmy life's blood حَتَّىuntil غَداbecame
قَلْبِيmy heart أَسِيراًa captive مَاnot لَهُfor it مِنْany فَادِone who ransoms
Your glances seized my life's blood, until
My heart became a captive with no one to ransom it.
لاَno غَرْوَwonder إِنْif قَتَلَتْkilled عُيُونُكِyour eyes مُغْرَماًa lovesick man
فَلَكَمْfor how many صَرَعْتِyou felled بِهاwith them مِنَof الآسَادِthe lions
No wonder if your eyes have slain a lovesick man,
For how many lions you have felled with them!
يَاO مَنْyou who حَوَتْencompassed كلَّall المَحاسِنِthe beauties فيin الوَرىhumankind
وَالحُسْنُand beauty فِيهاin her عَاكِفٌa dweller فِيin بادِa nomad
O you who possess all the beauties of humankind,
And beauty in her is a dweller within a nomad.
رِفْقاًbe gentle بِمَنْwith the one who أَسَرَتْcaptured عُيُونُكِyour eyes قَلْبَهُhis heart
وَدَعِيand let السُّيُوفَthe swords تَقِرُّrest فيin الأَغْمادِthe sheaths
Be gentle with the one whose heart your eyes have captured,
And let the swords rest in their sheaths.
وَتَعَطَّفِيand show tenderness جُوداًgenerously عَلَيَّtoward me بِقُبْلَةٍwith a kiss
فَبِميمِfor in the letter mīm مَبْسِمِكِyour smiling mouth شِفاءُhealing الصَّادِيthe thirsty one
And generously show me tenderness with a kiss,
For in the mīm of your smiling mouth is healing for the thirsty.
مَاتَتْdied أَطَالَmay prolong اللَهُGod عُمْرَكِyour life سَلْوَتِيmy solace
وَلَقَدْand indeed فَنِيperished صَبْرِيmy patience وَعَاشَand lived on سُهَادِيmy sleeplessness
My solace has died—may God prolong your life—
And my patience has indeed perished, while my sleeplessness lives on.
وَمِنَand among المُنىwishes لَوْif only دَامَlasted لِيfor me فِيكِfor you الضَّنىwasting sickness
يَاoh حَبَّذاhow welcome فَأَراكِthen I would see you مِنْamong عُوَّاديmy sickbed visitors
And among my wishes is that my lovesickness for you might last—
Oh, how welcome! Then I would see you among my sickbed visitors.
وَأُجيلُand I let roam مِنكِof you نَواظِريmy eyes فيover ناضِرٍfresh bloom
مِنof خَدِّكِyour cheek المُتَرَقرِقِshimmering الوَقادِblazing
And I would let my eyes roam over your fresh bloom—
The bloom of your shimmering, blazing cheek.
وَأَقُولُand I say ماwhatever شِئْتِyou wish اصْنَعِيdo يَاO مُنْيَتِيmy heart's desire
مَاnot لِيfor me سِواكِother than you وَلَوْand even if حُرِمْتُI am denied مُرادِيmy desire
And I say: Do whatever you wish, O my heart's desire.
I have nothing but you, even if I am denied my desire,
إِلاexcept مَدِيحpraise المُصْطَفَىthe Chosen One هُوَit عُمْدَتِيmy mainstay
وَبِهِand with it سَأَلْقَىI shall meet اللَهَGod يَوْمَon the day of مَعادِيmy return
Save praise of the Chosen One: it is my mainstay.
And with it I shall meet God on the day of my return.
