ياO مَنْyou who تجنَّبْتُI shunned صبريmy patience فيin تجنُّبِهِhis shunning
عَمْداًdeliberately وعاصَيْتُand I defied نوميmy sleep فيin تغضُّبِهِhis anger
O you, in whose shunning I forsook my patience,
deliberately, and defied my sleep in your anger.
أَنباكtold you شاهدُthe visible aspect of أَمريmy condition عَنabout مغيَّبهِits hidden aspect
وجدَّand grew earnest جِدُّthe earnestness of الهَوىlove بيwith me فيin تلعُّبهِits toying
My outward state told you of its hidden side,
and love grew earnest with me even in its play.
ياO نازِحاًdistant one لَعِبَتْtoyed أَيديthe hands of الفراقِseparation بهwith him
هَبْgrant ليto me مِنsome of الدَّمْعِthe tears ماthat which أَبكيI weep عليكَfor you بِهِwith it
O distant one, with whom the hands of separation have toyed,
grant me tears with which to weep for you.
كأَنَّas though قلبَكَyour heart سُقميmy sickness فيin قَساوَتِهِits harshness
وَوَردَand the rose of خدَّيْكyour two cheeks قلبيmy heart فيin تَلَهُّبِهِits blazing
It is as though your heart were my sickness in its harshness,
and the rose of your cheeks were my heart in its blazing.
حتَّىuntil متىwhen زفراتيmy sighs فيin تصاعُدِهاtheir ascent
إِلىuntil المماتِdeath ودمعيand my tears فيin تصوُّبِهِtheir downward flow
How long will my sighs keep rising—
until death—while my tears keep streaming down?
أَخفيتُI concealed سلوةَthe solace of حُرٍّa free man فيin تذلُّلِهhis self-abasement
وإِنَّماand only قيلَit was called قلبٌa heart منbecause of تقلُّبِهِits turning
I concealed a free man's solace in his self-abasement,
and it was called a heart only because it keeps turning.
وليand I have فؤادٌa heart إِذاwhen طالgrew long العذابُthe torment بِهِfor it
هامwent love-mad اشتياقاًwith longing إِلىfor لُقْياmeeting معذِّبِهِits tormentor
And I have a heart that, when its torment is prolonged,
goes mad with longing to meet its tormentor.
يفديكَhe ransoms you بالنفسwith his life صَبٌّa lovesick lover لوif يكونُthere were لهُfor him
أَعزُّdearer منthan نفسهhis own life شيءٌanything فداكhe would ransom you بِهِwith it
A lovesick lover ransoms you with his life; if he had
anything dearer than his own life, he would ransom you with it.
