والهَوىby love لاmay not خِفْتُI feared عاذِلَتيmy female reproacher
والهَوى لا خِفْتُ عاذِلَتي
فيin هَوىlove of مَنْone who جَلَّis exalted عنbeyond صِفَتيmy description
في هَوى مَنْ جَلَّ عن صِفَتي
By Love—no, I have not feared my reproacher,
By love, may I never fear the woman who reproaches me
in loving one too sublime for my description.
In loving one too sublime for me to describe.
مَنْwhoever لَحَانيreproaches me عَنْfor هَوَاهُlove of him فَفيthen in
مَنْ لَحَاني عَنْ هَوَاهُ فَفي
وَجْهِهِhis face الفتَّانِthe bewitching مَعْذِرَتيmy excuse
وَجْهِهِ الفتَّانِ مَعْذِرَتي
Whoever reproaches me for loving him—in
If anyone reproaches me for loving him, then in
his beguiling face lies my excuse.
His bewitching face lies my excuse.
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom مَنْthe one who قَدْindeed خَسِرْتُI have lost بِهِthrough him
بِأَبي مَنْ قَدْ خَسِرْتُ بِهِ
حَظَّshare دُنْيائِيmy worldly life وآخِرَتِيand my hereafter
حَظَّ دُنْيائِي وآخِرَتِي
My father be ransom for the one through whom I have lost
May my father be a ransom for the one through whom I have lost
my portion of this world and the next.
My share in this world and the hereafter.
إِنْif جَرىcomes about قَتْليmy being killed عَلَىat يَدِهِhis hand
إِنْ جَرى قَتْلي عَلَى يَدِهِ
فهوَthen he is فيin حِلٍّabsolution وفيand in سَعَةِfreedom
فهوَ في حِلٍّ وفي سَعَةِ
Should my death come about at his hand,
If I should be killed at his hand,
he is absolved—and wholly free.
Then he is absolved and at liberty.
