عدوٌّ لي يلقَّبُ بالحبيبِ
He came to me, striding in a tunic of lādh cloth—
To me came, hastening in a silk shirt,
an enemy of mine who is dubbed “the beloved.”
an enemy of mine, nicknamed 'the beloved.'

بِلاwithout واشٍa talebearer أَتيتَyou came وَلاnor رَقيبِa watcher
بِلا واشٍ أَتيتَ وَلا رَقيبِ
In astonishment I said, “How can this be?
So, astonished, I said, 'How is this—
You have come with no tale-bearer and no watcher.”
you have come without a talebearer or a watcher?'

Then he said, 'The sun gave me a shirt
of wondrous hue, from sunset’s afterglow.
of unusual hue, from the afterglow of sunset.

So my robe, the wine, and the hue of my cheek
So my garment, the wine, and the color of my cheek
