قَالواthey said جَفَاكَhas forsaken you الَّذيthe one whom تَهْوىyou love فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُمْto them
نَوْمِيmy sleep تَعَلَّمَlearned مِنْهُfrom him فَهْوَso it يَجْفُونيforsakes me
They said, “The one you love has forsaken you,” so I told them:
They said, "The one you love has abandoned you," so I said to them,
“My sleep has learned from him, so it forsakes me.”
"My sleep has learned abandonment from him, so it abandons me."
لَوْif قَاسَcompared مَنْthose who قَدْalready مَضىhave gone before حُبِّيmy love بِحُبِّهِمُwith their love
كانُواthey would be إِذاwhen وُصِفَتْwere described أَشْجَانُهُمْtheir sorrows دُونيbeneath me
Had those who have gone before compared my love with theirs,
If those who've passed compared their love to mine,
They would fall short of me when their sorrows were described.
They would be beneath me when their passions are described.
كأَنَّas though دَمْعِيmy tears عَلَىupon خَدَّيmy cheek وَصُفْرَتَهُand its yellowness
حَبَابُbeads دَمْعِtears النَّدىthe dew مِنْfrom حَوْلِaround نِسْرِيْنِa wild rose
It is as though my tears upon my cheek, and its yellow pallor,
It's as if my tears upon my cheek and their yellowness
Were beads of dew’s tears around a wild rose.
Were lovers' tears that fell around Nesreen.
