أَماIs there not لِتَطْويلِfor the prolonging of هذاthis اللَّيلِnight تقصيرُa shortening
أَما لِتَطْويلِ هذا اللَّيلِ تقصيرُ
مَنْwhoever شَفَّهُhas worn him thin الشَّوْقُlonging فيin شكواهُhis lament معذورُexcused
مَنْ شَفَّهُ الشَّوْقُ في شكواهُ معذورُ
Is there no shortening of this long-drawn-out night?
Is there no shortening this long night's span
He whom longing has worn thin is excused for his lament.
For one whom longing sickens, his excuse is plain.
بانَdeparted الحَبيبُthe beloved فَإِلماميso my encounters بِهِwith him لَممٌa touch of madness
بانَ الحَبيبُ فَإِلمامي بِهِ لَممٌ
بعدَafter البِعادِseparation وزَوْراتيand my visits لَهُto him زُورُfalsehood
بعدَ البِعادِ وزَوْراتي لَهُ زُورُ
The beloved has departed, so my encounters with him are mere delirium
My darling visited me in my dreams
after separation, and my visits to him are mere illusion.
After our parting, my false trysts with him remain.
