تَنَفَّسْتُI sighed الغَداةَat dawn وَقَدْand already تَوَلَّوْاthey turned away
تَنَفَّسْتُ الغَداةَ وَقَدْ تَوَلَّوْا
وعِيرُهُمُand their caravan مُعارِضَةُcrossing الطَّريقِthe road
وعِيرُهُمُ مُعارِضَةُ الطَّريقِ
I sighed at dawn, when they had turned away,
I breathed relief at dawn when they were gone
and their caravan was crossing the road.
Their taunting me to join them now a distant song
فَنَادَوْاso they cried out بِالحَريقِabout the fire فَظِلْتُso I kept أَبْكيweeping
فَنَادَوْا بِالحَريقِ فَظِلْتُ أَبْكي
فَنادَواthen they cried out بِالحَريقِabout the fire وبِالغَريقِand about the drowning person
فَنادَوا بِالحَريقِ وبِالغَريقِ
So they cried out, “Fire!” and I kept weeping;
They yelled of fire as I wept all alone
then they cried out, “Fire! And someone drowning!”
Of fire and shipwreck did their voices drone
