أَيُّwhat شَيْءٍthing أَمَرُّmore bitter مِنْthan يَوْمِa day of بَيْنٍseparation
أَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَمَرُّ مِنْ يَوْمِ بَيْنٍ
وفِراقٍand parting لِصَاحِبٍfrom a companion وأَنيسِand a dear friend
وفِراقٍ لِصَاحِبٍ وأَنيسِ
What is more bitter than a day of separation
What is more bitter than the day
And parting from a companion and a dear friend?
Of parting with a friend and companion?
لَوْif رَمىstruck اللَهُGod بِالفِراقِwith separation المَناياdeaths
لَوْ رَمى اللَهُ بِالفِراقِ المَنايا
شُغِلَتwould be distracted عَنْfrom طِلابِهاtheir pursuit لِلنُّفُوسِof souls
شُغِلَت عَنْ طِلابِها لِلنُّفُوسِ
If God were to strike Death with separation,
If God ordained separation as death
It would be distracted from its pursuit of souls.
Souls would be too busy mourning to seek it
