He went round with two suns of two wines,

    in two golden, jeweled cups:

a bān bough with a moon above it,

passing round two cups of two wines.

As he rises, he is nearly split by his

haunches into two when he bends.

As though the roses of his cheekbones, upon

his cheeks, were two fires above two waters.

The fire is not quenched by water in him, nor does the

water flow from beneath these two.

So look at him—as though cut short

were the locks at his temples, for fear of two fires,

in a night that embroidered the gauzy robe of his cheeks

at his dawn with two embroidered bands.

So whenever he embodied the morning for us,

night took shape in him in two likenesses.

Its stars weep with longing within it,

as an eye wept with two tears.

As though the sides of his cheeks had lent

the light of morning two dawns.

    فَصَارَ حَظِّي مِنْ ذَيْنِ حَظَّيْنِ

    I embraced a full moon within it, and he embraced me;

so my share of those two became two shares.

And the full moon's two hands had draped, out of

passion, two sashes around our necks.

As though he were a lover who had won

with his two hands two unions from our estrangement.

As though we, with darkness bringing us together,

were two dawns shining from beneath two nights.
