بادَت وَغَيَّرَ آيَهُنَّ مَعَ البِلى

إِلّا رَواكِدَ جَمرُهُنَّ هَباءُ

They vanished, their traces altered by decay,

They have vanished, their traces altered with decay,

save hearthstones standing fast, their embers mere dust,

save unmoving hearthstones, their embers now dust,

وَمُشَجَّجٌ أَمّا سَواءُ قَذالِهِ

وَمُشَجَّجٌ أَمّا سَواءُ قَذالِهِ

فَبَدا وَغَيَّرَ سارَهُ المَعزاءُ

فَبَدا وَغَيَّرَ سارَهُ المَعزاءُ

and one gashed at the head: the middle of its occiput

and a battered stake—as for the middle of its nape,

came into view, while the hard, stony ground altered the rest of it.
