By my life, I shall not forget, however long we have been apart,
My meeting with al-Damri's daughter in the deserted land.
تَذَكَّرتُهاI remembered her وَهناًlate at night وَقَدwhile already حالَintervened دونَهاbetween me and her
قُرىvillages of أَذرَبيجانَAzerbaijan المَسالِحُthe armed outposts وَالجاليand the departing host
I remembered her deep in the night, while between us lay
The villages of Azerbaijan, the garrisons, and the departing host.
أَلاcome now ياO اِصبَحانيyou two, give me morning wine قَبلَbefore غارَةِthe raid of سِنجالِSinjal
وَقَبلَand before مَناياdeaths باكِراتٍcoming early وَآجالِand appointed ends
Ho, you two, give me morning wine before the Sinjal raid,
And before early-coming deaths and appointed ends,
وَقَبلَand before اِختِلافِthe clash of القَومِthe men مِنfrom بَينِamong سالِبٍa plunderer
وَآخَرَand another مَسلوبٍdespoiled هَوىfell بَينَamong أَبطالِchampions
And before the men clash, one a plunderer,
And another despoiled, fallen among champions.
وَقُلتُand I said لَهُمto them خُدّواdig a trench لَهُfor him بِرِماحِكُمwith your spears
بِنازِحَةِin a remote place العُوّادِvisitors خَفّاقَةِquivering الآلِthe mirage
And I told them: dig him a grave with your spears
In a place far from visitors, with a shimmering mirage.
فَبَكَّواso they wept قَليلاًa little ثُمَّthen وَلَّواthey turned away وَوَدَّعواand bade farewell
وَقَدand already غادَرواthey left behind فيin اللَحدِthe burial niche لَحمىmy flesh وَأَوصاليand my limbs
So they wept a little, then turned away and bade farewell,
Having left my flesh and limbs in the burial niche.
لَقَدindeed غادَرَتabandoned خَيلٌhorsemen بِموقانَat Muqan أَسلَمَتforsook

Indeed, horsemen at Muqan abandoned and forsook
Bukayr of Banu al-Shuddakh, the rider of Atlal,
فَتىًa youth كانَused to يَرويslake سَيفَهُhis sword وَسِنانَهُand his spearhead
مِنَfrom العَلَقِclotted blood الآنيhot لَدىbeside المُجحَرِthe hard-pressed man التاليtrailing behind
A youth who would slake his sword and spearhead
With hot, clotted blood, beside the hard-pressed man in the rear.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتknew خَيلٌhorsemen بِموقانَat Muqan أَنَّنيthat I
أَناI الفارِسُthe horseman الحاميthe defender لَدىin the face of المَوتdeath نَزّالِa close-combat fighter
And horsemen at Muqan knew well that I—
I am the defending horseman, a close-combat fighter in the face of death.
وَأَعدَدتُand I prepared لِلساقَينِfor the two shins وَالرِجلِand the foot وَالنَساand the sciatic sinew
لِجاماًa bridle وَسَرجاًand a saddle فَوقَupon أَعوَجَA'waj مُختالِproudly prancing
And I readied for the two shins, the foot, and the sciatic sinew
A bridle and a saddle upon proud, prancing A'waj.
أَرِقتُI lay sleepless لَهُfor him فيamong القَومِthe men وَالصُبحِwhile the dawn ساطِعٌshining

I lay sleepless for him among the men, while dawn shone,
As a long arrow rose, launched by the far-shooting archer.
وَذَكَّرَنيand reminded me أَهلَthe people of القَوادِسِal-Qawadis أَنَّنيthat I
رَأَيتُI saw رِجالاًmen واجِمينَsilent and downcast بِأَجمالِat Ajmal
And what recalled the people of al-Qawadis to me was that I
Saw men silent and downcast at Ajmal.
