What stirs you at the memory of al-Rāqī's daughter,

when you remain burdened with sorrow and apprehension?

She rose, showing you luxuriant hair cascading loose,

like black snakes that have been rubbed with oil.

What stirs you? You find no solace; you remember her,

and she grants no promised favor to one who longs.

Will you be distracted from her today, now she is far away,

by a she-camel strong as a wild ass, swift in trot and stride?

Lean and hardy, silent on night journeys save for her turning

by night, as she presses on with lowered head.

Tough under the saddle's wooden frame, swift-footed,

when the stars hang low and flicker.

And if you venture with her into a trackless waste, she toils onward,

when mirage shimmers after shimmering mirage.

She moaned on the night-traveler's path, and was answered

by a dove, one of the ring-necked doves.

When the valley opened out before her and forced her

from Dhū Ṭuwāla into a winding, easy passage,

she kept urging onward with her lifted gaze a landmark peak

from the basin of Raqd, though she saw it would not be driven.

Her forelegs and hindlegs stride along a beaten track,

pouring speed upon it like rain from a lingering lightning-cloud.

She almost tossed me off with the saddle at the sound

of a dove, crying 'sāq' after 'sāq.'

To you, ʿArāb, I complain today of our poverty,

O lord of eminence, O lord of enduring nobility.

You are the prince before whom heads bow—

the people's great chiefs, from open country and distant regions.

You dispel the anguish of the afflicted,

and unlock his neck-shackle after he has been bound.

And mend the rift whose healing is despaired of,

and dispel distress after it has closed in.

In a house of illustrious deeds, might, and nobility,

first to the goals of glory, and son of one who came first.

Great in bounty, lavish with wealth, worthy of trust,

lavish in gifts, whose words are borne out.

For word reached me that you were angered on my behalf,

and of a blow you struck in earnest, no vain attempt.

So that delighted me until, in my joy, I nearly

leapt upon the mountain or flung my limbs wide.

So he shall find in me, if I live to meet him,

one who greets him with the finest greeting any man can give.
