Was it for two deserted campsites that the riders turned aside,

at Ḥaql al-Rukhāmā, whose time for decay had come?

At their two camps remained two stones beside a smooth rock,

    chestnut-brown above, black where the fire had touched them;

and a remnant of ashes, dove-gray, still visible,

and two drainage trenches cut into previously untouched hard ground.

    بِذاتِ السَلامِ قَد عَفا طَلَلاهُما

    They remained for Laylā and al-Rabāb, though both women had gone;

at Dhāt al-Salām, their two dwelling-traces had faded.

Then my tears flooded onto my cloak, as though

the spouts of a water-carrier's two skins were both pouring.

In Laylā's nights, the sweetness of her water was not mixed

with salt, and the strands of our two bonds were strong.

Two breeders of pure-white eggs, with a darkness

    of hue—raven-black, unbroken—covering them both,

who, when they fanned their wings hard, trailed a dust-cloud,

whirlwinds of what their footsteps stirred up,

and two dusky flocks—I startled them one morning

at the water, their calls familiar to me.

When they left two sandgrouse behind there, those two spent

the whole stretch of daylight seeking their companions.

Whenever I pursued some purpose, I would cast it

before my eyes, until they reached their utmost limit.

And I was kept from you, though I bore no hatred,

by two elusive ones whose pursuit was ordained for me.

And a sturdy she-camel, like the planks of a bier, I urged onward,

when they said of the two blazing stars, 'Those are the very ones.'

    فَيا نِعمَ نِعمَ المُغتَلى مُغتَلاهُما

    She strides high on her hind legs toward you, son of Marbaʿ;

so how fine, how fine a goal is their goal!

When the two sides of her chest held

her braided girth only in front of their broad breast-pad,

she clothed her upper forelegs with her chest, and was borne onward

by two forearms meeting like a tall, stubborn ostrich's.

She spent a night at Ublā, then a night

at Ḥādha, and crossed still farther distances beyond them both.

And at evening she passed the valley mouths, the mouths of Ghayqa,

speeding on two sinewy forelegs, unflagging in their night-travel.

She renewed burst after burst of speed, and slackened

the strands of her two girths after their long chafing.

But for the young man of the Anṣār, her hearing would not have been battered

by Ḍamīr, nor his Ḥawrān, and then their villages.

And from Yazīd son of Marbaʿ I surely hope

for his gift of two choice blessings he has chosen:

    سَعى في بُغاءِ المَجدِ حَتّى اِحتَواهُما

    his gift of bounty and honor;

he strove in pursuit of glory until he gained them both.
