Long has been the stay beside a ruined trace at Yam'ud,

now vanished; every dear companion dies in his turn.

The home of the maiden to whom we used to say:

'O unadorned gazelle, lovely of neck!'

As though she and the days-old young one she rears,

a delight to the eye, were two clad in black-dyed cloth.

She draws the dove close to her, absorbed in play,

with ripe arak berries in hanging clusters.

Will a swift she-camel bring me to the tribe's dwellings,

long-necked among choice mounts, her peers long-necked too?

They sweep along in a troop, scattered yet together,

bearing youths like drunkards, swaying as they travel by night.

Narrow-eyed, they vie with one another in their reins,

when they falter from the heat of the hard rocks.

And each races against the loop of an outstretched rein,

like a mountain snake turning away, unpursued.

I was told that Rabi', because he has grazed camels,

sends me his foul abuse, his neck turned aside.

    لا يُدرِكَنَّكَ تَفريعي وَتَصعيدي

    So if you dislike my satire, avoid my anger;

let not my downward and upward assaults overtake you.

And if you refuse, I shall set my foot

on the nostrils of the man who puffs out his jowls.

Do not think, son of 'Ilba', that contending with me

is the coolness of pure milk from she-camels with great, towering humps.

When their udders call for aid, there rush to help

layers of raw fat piled upon their backs.

If they spend the evening among 'urfut acacias with bare crowns,

bereft of shoots, bare of thorns, stripped clean,

they wake with their udders holding brimming bowlfuls

    of delicious, sweet, unskimmed milk.

So ward it off from yourselves with their milk, as did

for them the milch camels of the sons of Qays ibn Mas'ud.

I am a man of the sons of Dhubyan; they well know

I guard a watering-place of glory, never approached.

With me is the people's Rudayni spear, with which I defend

their pool, my flank never trembling.

I am al-Jihashi, Shammakh, and my father is not

an illegitimate son of some untraceable outsider.

From him I was begotten; through him my inherited honor was not adulterated

by twisting it, as neck-sinew is bound around a stick.

If you will not restrain your poet,

and do not restrain one another from insulting and threatening me,

then run the wagered race: as long as I live, against you I am

full of force at the first burst, a runner over rugged heights,

wary of the whip, yet breaking clear at leisure

from the bunched ranks, outstripping the swift-striding mounts.

But has it reached her, despite all that has happened,

that wars shielded themselves from us with champions?

Do not suppose me, though you are an inexperienced man,

a water snake between the stone lining and the lime plaster.

But for Ibn 'Affan—and authority is to be feared—

you would have been brought into a rock-hard pass of al-La'ba'.

Then join Bajla, claim kinship with them, and be among them,

until they lend you glory without firm foundations.

And leave the heritage of Khufaq; they have perished,

or go, alive, to Ri'l and Matrud.

And the folk who came to you were Bahz, ahead of their brothers,

like a torrent overrunning the edges of scattered bands.

That is Imru' al-Qays; its present members do not give you

the keys on behalf of those of it who are absent.

And if we oppose you—Sammak with its argument,

and Qunfudh—you will withdraw from it, unpraised.

Combat with the bright blades of India is our custom,

and we are not accustomed to striking with boulders.
