May God reward him well as a commander, and may

God’s hand bless that torn skin.

Whoever hastens or rides an ostrich’s two wings

to catch up with what you accomplished yesterday will be outstripped.

You settled affairs, then left in their wake

calamities in their sheaths, not yet split open.

After a man was slain in Medina and darkness fell

upon the earth for him, do the thorn-trees sway on their trunks?

The chaste virgin keeps miscarrying her unborn child,

at a report of news hanging above the riding-camels.

And I never feared that his death would come

at the hands of a fierce leopard, blue-eyed, with head lowered.
