And one startles me with his greeting, as though

his greeting, in the pain it causes, were a farewell.

Eyes grow drowsy at the sight of him when he appears,

and ears vomit at his singing.

Are we to seek healing through that, when from his notes

    pains and aches are born?

Or how can a hideous man's singing delight us,

when his face forever terrifies and frightens us?

We contort our faces to escape his voice,

so that hearing him seems like enduring abuse.

And his fingertips' strokes seem like blows to necks,

and his rhythm seems an assault.

Sweeter for us to hear than your singing

is the roar of lions fighting one another.
