مَاnot كانَwas رَأْيُكَyour judgment مَحمْوداًpraiseworthy بِمِدحتهِin praising him
مَا كانَ رَأْيُكَ مَحمْوداً بِمِدحتهِ
فَقُلْتُso I said بَلْon the contrary كانَwas رَأْييmy judgment فيهِof him مَحمْودْpraiseworthy
فَقُلْتُ بَلْ كانَ رَأْيي فيهِ مَحمْودْ
Your judgment in praising him was not praiseworthy.
Your opinion of his praise was not right
So I said, “On the contrary, my judgment of him was praiseworthy.
I said, no, my opinion of him was sound
وَوَجّهُهُand his face شَاهِدٌa witness يُنبيكَtells you عنabout خَبَرِيmy report
وَوَجّهُهُ شَاهِدٌ يُنبيكَ عن خَبَرِي
وَالبَاءُand the letter bāʾ فيin خَبَرِيmy report لَيْسَتْis not بِمَوجُودْpresent
وَالبَاءُ في خَبَرِي لَيْسَتْ بِمَوجُودْ
And his face is a witness, telling you of my report;
A witness directs you about my news
and the letter bāʾ is missing from my khabarī (‘my report’).”
The falseness in my news was not found
