You built a mosque upon reverence for God,

and mosques are the finest buildings of worshippers.

So speak of an embroidered border above a pool,

for its radiant beauty, the sea envies the pool.

It has varied robes, yet its embroidered border

from the mosque, kept flourishing by God, is but one.

It is the mosque that unites beneficence and beauty, and whose merit

Zayd, Amr, and Khalid have acknowledged.

And its battlements have shaken hands with the stars of night,

so among the stars they are but Farqad stars.

And the lofty top of its minaret has guided the neighbors,

so none are at a loss about it, and none turn away from it.

And dismay seized the bells of the monasteries,

and fear, so no arm was stretched toward them.

The patriarchs lamented over them in the darkness,

while they lay with them, cast aside and unsold.

Thus have the days decreed among their people:

One people's misfortunes are another people's gains.
