They spoke the truth: they have seen the rose fenced in.
They spoke truly, for they saw the rose hedge -
Have they seen it amid cheek-down of violets?
Did they see it in a splendor of violet?
عَشِقَloved passionately النَّاسُpeople ولاbut none مِثْلُlike الذيthe one whom
هِمْتُI became love-crazed وَجْداًwith longing فِيهِfor him فَانْظْرso look وَتَفَرَّجْand behold
People have loved, but none is like the one
People love, but not like the one
For whom I have gone mad with longing—so look and behold!
I desired with passion; look and take joy!
مَنْwho رَأَىhas seen بَدْراًa full moon وَغُصْناًand a bough وَنَقًاand a sand dune
قَدْindeed تَجلَّىshone forth وَتَثَنَّىand swayed وَتَرَجْرَجْand quivered
Who has seen a full moon, a bough, and a sand dune
Who saw a full moon, a branch, a sapling
Shine forth, sway, and quiver?
Radiant, swaying, freely dancing?
وَجهُهُhis face نُسْخَةُa copy حُسْنٍof beauty حُرّرَتْwas carefully written out

His face is a finely written copy of beauty,
His face is a copy of beauty inscribed
And it bears a line of cheek-down added in the margin.
With a line of down that can be brushed.
ذُوpossessed of وِشَاحٍa sash مِثلُlike قَلْبيmy heart قَلِقٍrestless

With a sash as restless as my heart,
One with a wrap like my restless heart
And a waist-wrap made tight by him, like my breast.
And a skirt that pains my bosom to part,
وَأَصَمٍّand a deaf man فُتِحَتْwere opened أَسْماعُهُhis ears
بِقَوافٍby rhymes كَمْhow many بِهاby them يُفْتَحُis opened مُرْتَجْsomething bolted shut
And a deaf man's ears were opened
Deaf but whose ears were opened
By rhymes—how often they open what is bolted shut!
By curves through which an obtuse is freed.
قَالَhe said شِعْرٌpoetry لكَyours أَمْor دُرٌّpearls علَىyet
أَنَّهُthat it is أَبْهَىmore splendid مِنthan الدُّرِّpearls وَأَبْهَجْand more delightful
He said, “Is this your poetry, or pearls? Yet
One said, "Is this poetry for you or a pearl?"
It is more splendid than pearls and more delightful.”
Saying it's finer than pearls and more fair.
قُلْتُI said تَاجُcrown الدِّينِof the faith فيهِin it وَصْفُهُhis description
قالَhe said هذاthis مَلِكُking الشِّعْرِof poetry المُتَوَّجْcrowned
I said, “Taj al-Din is described in it.”
I said, "The crown of religion is his description."
He said, “This is the crowned king of poetry.”
He said, "This is the king of eminent poetry."
