وَقالُوا تَعَرْقَبَ في وَعدِهِ

وَقالُوا تَعَرْقَبَ في وَعدِهِ

وَقَد كان في نفسهِ سَاقِطَا

وَقَد كان في نفسهِ سَاقِطَا

They said he broke his promise like ʿUrqūb,

They said he failed to keep his word

And he was already fallen in himself.

Though in himself he was fallen

فَقلتُ صَدَقْتُمْ وما مِنْتُمُ

فَقلتُ صَدَقْتُمْ وما مِنْتُمُ

فَما زِلْتُ أَعْرِفُهُ حَائِطَا

فَما زِلْتُ أَعْرِفُهُ حَائِطَا

So I said: You have spoken truly and have not lied;

I said you spoke truth and meant no slight

For I have always known him as a wall.

Still I know him to build many a wall
