The man of letters endures the hide before which

    Even the mountains nearly bow.

And he comes forth on his Nowruz day,

So no vein in his neck finds rest.

And were he to seek lodging on his own nape,

There would be no room there for him.

    أَصَابِعُ راحتهِ أَذْرُعُ

    And his companions are all stout-armed men;

The fingers of each man's palm are arms.

Each is much given to teasing his friend,

Obsessed with what lies beneath his locks.

    So nothing restrains his palm,

But his companion is the bald one.
