لكَto you الفَضلُthe credit إذfor نَوهْتَyou spoke highly فيin بلدِىmy homeland باسمِىof my name
لكَ الفَضلُ إذ نَوهْتَ في بلدِى باسمِى
وَقَدand indeed كنتُI was إذwhen ذكَّرْتَهاyou reminded it دارسَfaded الرَّسمِthe trace
وَقَد كنتُ إذ ذكَّرْتَها دارسَ الرَّسمِ
The credit is yours, for you extolled my name in my homeland.
You have done me a kindness by praising my name in my country
And when you reminded it of me, I was a faded trace.
Though when you mentioned it, I was studying propriety
أَبيتُI pass the night وقدand indeed خاطَبْتنيyou addressed me عَنout of تَواضُعٍhumility
أَبيتُ وقد خاطَبْتني عَن تَواضُعٍ
رَفَعْتَyou raised بهِthrough it قَدْرَstanding السِّراجal-Siraj (the lamp) إلىto النَّجمِthe star
رَفَعْتَ بهِ قَدْرَ السِّراج إلى النَّجمِ
I pass the night, you having addressed me out of humility,
I refused, though you had addressed me with humility
Through which you raised al-Siraj's standing to the star.
You raised the lamp's worth to that of the stars through your generosity
