هَزِئَتْshe mocked بيat me عِندَat ابتِدارِthe early onset of مَشِيبيmy graying
هَزِئَتْ بي عِندَ ابتِدارِ مَشِيبي
يَومَthe day قالَتْshe said كالسَّائِلِlike a questioner المَسْروبِafflicted with diarrhea
يَومَ قالَتْ كالسَّائِلِ المَسْروبِ
She mocked me at the early onset of my graying,
She mocked me when my hair began to gray
the day she spoke like a questioner afflicted with diarrhea:
The day she said, like a drunkard would say:
نَزَلَdescended الشَّيْبgray hair أَينَwhere قُلْتُI said علىupon الرَّأْسِthe head
نَزَلَ الشَّيْب أَينَ قُلْتُ على الرَّأْسِ
فَقالَتْthen she said هذاthis وَقَارُthe dignity of المَشِيبِgray hair
فَقالَتْ هذا وَقَارُ المَشِيبِ
“Where has gray hair descended?” I said, “Upon the head.”
"Where has this grayness descended?" I said "On my head"
Then she said, “This is the dignity of gray hair.”
She said "This is the dignity of gray hair"
