أَعِدْreturn مَدْحِيmy praise عَلَيَّto me وَخُذْand take سِواهُsomething other than it
أَعِدْ مَدْحِي عَلَيَّ وَخُذْ سِواهُ
فَقَدْfor indeed أَتْعَبْتَنيyou have wearied me يَاO مُسْتَرِيحُone at ease
فَقَدْ أَتْعَبْتَني يَا مُسْتَرِيحُ
Return my praise to me, and take something else;
Take back my praises of you, keep the rest
For you have wearied me, O you at ease.
For you have wearied me, oh you at rest!
وَلاand do not تَغْضَبْbe angry إذاif أَنْشَدْتُI recite يَوماًone day
وَلا تَغْضَبْ إذا أَنْشَدْتُ يَوماً
سِوَاهُsomething other than it وَقِيلَand it is said ليto me هذاthis الصَّحِيحُthe truth
سِوَاهُ وَقِيلَ لي هذا الصَّحِيحُ
And do not be angry if one day I recite
Do not be angry if I recite, one day,
Something else, and am told, “This is the truth.”
Another’s verse, and am told “This is best!”
