مَوْلايmy lord أُقسِمُI swear لَمْnot تَعُدْremains فيin مَنزليmy home
مَوْلاي أُقسِمُ لَمْ تَعُدْ في مَنزلي
مِنany جَمْرَةٍan ember فيat العِيدِthe feast إلاexcept دُمَّليmy boil
مِن جَمْرَةٍ في العِيدِ إلا دُمَّلي
My lord, I swear, there no longer remains in my home
My Master, I swear you no longer live in my abode
a single ember at the feast except my boil.
Like an ember on Eid, except as my guest
حُوشِيتَmay you be spared مِنfrom قَاسٍa cruel one كأَنَّas though الدَّهْرَTime قدalready
حُوشِيتَ مِن قَاسٍ كأَنَّ الدَّهْرَ قد
أَعْداهُinfected it with غُلْظَتَهُits harshness وَقَدand indeed أَهْداهُgifted it ليto me
أَعْداهُ غُلْظَتَهُ وَقَد أَهْداهُ لي
May you be spared this cruel thing, as though Time had
You’ve become harsh with me, as if fate
infected it with its harshness and bestowed it on me.
Made you stubborn and destined you for me
وأَلَدُّand the most bitter ذِيone possessed of حَنَقٍrage عليَّagainst me كأَنَّماas though
وأَلَدُّ ذِي حَنَقٍ عليَّ كأَنَّما
تَغْليboils عَداوَةُthe hatred صَدْرهِof its breast فيin مِرْجَلِa cauldron
تَغْلي عَداوَةُ صَدْرهِ في مِرْجَلِ
And the bitterest of those enraged at me, as though
And you, full of spite against me, are like
the hatred in its breast were boiling in a cauldron.
The hatred in your chest boils in a pot
وَلَهُand it has وَليسَand there is not لهُfor it فَمٌa mouth أَكْلٌgnawing بهِby it
وَلَهُ وَليسَ لهُ فَمٌ أَكْلٌ بهِ
ليfor me شاغِلٌa distraction عَنfrom مَشْرَبٍdrink أومَأْor food (first fragment) كَلِcompletion of 'food'
لي شاغِلٌ عَن مَشْرَبٍ أومَأْ كَلِ
Though it has no mouth, it gnaws, and thereby
With a mouth that eats away at me
distracts me from drink or food.
Distracting me from drink or bite
وَيَقولُand says هذاthis one جَمْرَةٌan ember ويَقولُand says هذاthis one شَقْفpotsherd (word stem)
وَيَقولُ هذا جَمْرَةٌ ويَقولُ هذا شَقْف
ةٌfeminine noun ending والقولُand the verdict قَولُthe verdict الأَوَّلِof the first
ةٌ والقولُ قَولُ الأَوَّلِ
And one says, 'An ember'; another says, 'A pot-
And you say this is an ember and you say this is tinder
sherd'; the first one's verdict is right.
Yet the word is that of the former
وإذاand if تَوقَّدَblazed فيin سِراجٍa lamp جَمْرَةٌan ember
وإذا تَوقَّدَ في سِراجٍ جَمْرَةٌ
قَبليbefore me فتلكَthen that مزِيَّةٌa distinction لِلمُشْعِلِfor the kindler
قَبلي فتلكَ مزِيَّةٌ لِلمُشْعِلِ
And if an ember blazed in a lamp
And if an ember lights up in my lantern before me
before me, that is a distinction for the kindler.
That is a privilege for the kindler
أَتُرىdo you suppose? كَبِرْتُI have grown old وَزِدْتُand I have increased أَيضاَalso رُتْبةًin rank
أَتُرى كَبِرْتُ وَزِدْتُ أَيضاَ رُتْبةً
فجمعْتُso I combined حَظَّthe lot المُهتدِىof the guided one والمُطليand the coated one (reading uncertain)
فجمعْتُ حَظَّ المُهتدِى والمُطلي
Do you think I have grown old and risen in rank as well,
Do you see that I’ve grown and also increased in rank
and so combined the lot of the guided one and the coated one?
Thus I’ve attained the share of the guided and the misguided?
ولَقَدْand indeed بُلِيتُI was afflicted بهِwith it عَذُوّاًan enemy (apparent misspelling) باتَspent the night فيin
ولَقَدْ بُلِيتُ بهِ عَذُوّاً باتَ في
جِلْدِيmy skin فَرَّقَso have pity (contextual reading) لِمنfor whoever بذلكَwith that قَدindeed بُليwas afflicted
جِلْدِي فَرَّقَ لِمن بذلكَ قَد بُلي
Indeed, I have been afflicted with it—an enemy that spent the night in
And indeed I have suffered harm from him as an enemy who lodged
my skin; so have pity on anyone afflicted thus.
In my skin, tormenting those who by that are tormented
وَيَظَلُّand it keeps يَجمعُgathering ثُمَّthen يَجمَعُgathering وَهْوَwhile it is مِنwith
وَيَظَلُّ يَجمعُ ثُمَّ يَجمَعُ وَهْوَ مِن
حَسَدٍenvy عَليَّagainst me وَفَرْطِand excess of غَيْظٍrage مُمتَليfilled
حَسَدٍ عَليَّ وَفَرْطِ غَيْظٍ مُمتَلي
It keeps gathering, then gathering again, while it is
And he keeps gathering, then gathering, intoxicated
filled with envy of me and excessive rage.
With envy of me and excessive overflowing bile
