My housecat ran away on my feast day.

So look: is this happy day complete?

She scorned me when she saw my kitchen,

White as al-Walid’s sheet of paper,

And faces in my household that had become

Not white, and cooking pots not black.

Would she not flee far from us,

Even if we held her bound in fetters?

Where are my feast days, when the meat

Would roast, both fresh and dried?

And my sacrificial animals, with whose blood

I unjustly stained the earth’s cheek?

Those were my days, brought about by

The generosity of Shams al-Din—O days, return!
