رُزِقْتُI was granted بِنْتاًa daughter لَيتَهاwould that she لَمْdid not تَكُنْexist
رُزِقْتُ بِنْتاً لَيتَها لَمْ تَكُنْ
فيon لَيلَةٍa night كالدَّهُرِlike an eternity قَضّيتُهاI spent it
في لَيلَةٍ كالدَّهُرِ قَضّيتُها
I was granted a daughter—would that she had never existed—
I was blessed with a daughter, would that she had not been
On a night I spent that was like an eternity.
In a night like an epoch I spent it
وَقِيلَand it was said ماwhat سَميَّتَهاyou named her قُلتُI said لَوْif
وَقِيلَ ما سَميَّتَها قُلتُ لَوْ
بَكيْتُI wept مِنهاbecause of her كُنْتُI was سَمّيتُهاI named her
بَكيْتُ مِنها كُنْتُ سَمّيتُها
And I was asked, 'What did you name her?' I said, 'If
It was said what did you name her I said if
I had wept because of her, I would have named her.'
I had wept for her, I would have named her Tears
