وَقَفْتُI stood بِأطلالِat the ruins of الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones سَائِلاًinquiring
وَقَفْتُ بِأطلالِ الأَحِبَّةِ سَائِلاً
وَدَمعيand my tears يَسْقِيwater ثَمَّthere عَهْداًan old bond وَمَعْهَداand a familiar haunt
وَدَمعي يَسْقِي ثَمَّ عَهْداً وَمَعْهَدا
I stood at the ruins of the loved ones, inquiring,
I stood amidst the ruins of the beloved, asking,
And my tears water there an old bond and a familiar haunt.
While my tears watered the pact and the covenant.
وَمِنand among عَجَبٍwonders إنّيindeed I أَوَدُّlove دِيَارَهُمْtheir dwellings
وَمِن عَجَبٍ إنّي أَوَدُّ دِيَارَهُمْ
وَحَظِّيَand my share مِنهاfrom them حِينَwhen أَسألُهاI question them الصَّدَىthe echo
وَحَظِّيَ مِنها حِينَ أَسألُها الصَّدَى
And it is strange that I love their dwellings,
How strange that still I love their homes,
Yet my share from them, when I question them, is an echo.
Although my share therein when I ask is but an echo.
