I relieved you, and found relief from reproach,

and from rebuke that draws out the talk.

And I excelled at loving the dark-lipped gazelle,

languid in both eyes, yet free of illness.

You say, 'Has he fled from Ridwan, or does this one

have beauty unlike the beauty of humankind?'

For beauty is complete in none but this one,

not even, by your father, in the full moon.

And one night he visited me, while night was casting

cloaks of darkness over the horizons.

And dawn almost failed to appear out of shyness,

so he revealed it with what lay beneath the veil.

They said, 'Wine is the saliva of his mouth.'

And who gave it to you, O cup of wine?
