وَأَشَدُّand most fiercely ماhow أَعدَىinfected السَّقِيمُthe sick one سَقِيمَاanother sick one
I pass the evening sharing your waist's wasting sickness,
Last night in your embrace was bliss sublime,
And how fiercely one sick person infects another!
Though to the sick at heart it was but crime.
وَأَظُنُّand I think جَفنَكِyour eyelid قَدalready تَحَكَّمَruled فِيهماover them both

And I think your eyelid has ruled over them both,
Your eyelids' sway is tyranny, I know,
For it has excelled and made the division exact.
Yet in their rule all equity they show.

The wine you poured us from your lips' pure fount
tooth-stick reveals its concealed secret?
Was sweet, yet sweeter what your toothpick drowned.

And indeed we discovered that from its breath,
We found your breath as from a censer's store;
Since I found no drinking companion but the arak twig.
Your mouth contained all sweets and nothing more.

The neck is supple, and the eyes are kohl-dark.
That supple waist has routed all deceit -
O oryx, what have you stolen from the white gazelle!
Strange power your empty sleeve could thus defeat!

Your earring's flutter is in my heart; were it to strike
The tinkle of your bracelet's music dear
at the lightning of night with its flutter, that lightning would go unwatched.
Could shame the thunder if it sang out clear.
وأَناand I الذيthe one who حَكّمْتُهُI made it arbiter فيover مُهْجتيmy lifeblood
وَنَسِيتُand I forgot عَمْراًʿAmr فيكَin your case والتحكيمَاand the arbitration
And I am the one who made it arbiter over my lifeblood,
And I, who have surrendered all my heart,
And in your case I forgot ʿAmr and the arbitration.
Forgot a lifetime in your charms' sweet art.
