وَصَلْتُI joined غَبُوقيmy evening draught بالصَّبُوحِwith the morning draught وإنَّماand only
حَيَاتيmy life غَبُوقٌan evening draught مُسْعِدٌgladdening وَصَبُوحُand a morning draught
I joined my evening draught to the morning draught, and indeed
I reached my sadness at dawn, though
my life is nothing but a gladdening evening draught and a morning draught.
my life is a happy sadness and a dawn
وَنبهَّتُand I roused عِيدانيmy lutes وَلَمْand had not تَعْبثِplayed الصَّباthe east wind
بِعُودٍwith a bough وَلمْand had not يَنطِقْuttered a sound عَليهِupon it صَدُوحُa songbird
And I roused my lutes, while the east wind had not yet played
I awakened my fire sticks, but the morning breeze
with a bough, nor had a songbird sung upon it.
did not play with a stick or speak through a bellow
كَأَنِيas though I سَلَبْتُI robbed الدِّيكَthe rooster فيin الكَأْسِthe cup عَيْنَهُits eye
فَقَامَso it rose مَرُوعاًstartled مِنfrom كَراهُits slumber يَصِيحُcrowing
As though, in the cup, I had robbed the rooster of its eye,
It was as if I had plucked out the rooster's eye in the goblet
so it rose, startled from its slumber, crowing.
So it stood up startled, screaming out of hatred
