فَضَضتُI broke open عَنِfrom الدَّنِّthe wine jar مِسْكَmusk الخِتامِthe seal
وَرَاضَعْتُand I suckled شُرْبيَmy drinking بَعدَafter الفِطامِweaning
I broke the musk seal from the wine jar,
I have abandoned the evils of worldly pleasures,
and took to suckling wine again after weaning.
And weaned myself from drinking after infancy.
وَكَيْفَand how ثُبُوتيmy steadfastness علَىin تَوْبَةٍrepentance
وَقَدand already هَزَمَdefeated الفِطْرُfast-breaking شَهْرَthe month الصِّيامِof fasting
And how can I remain steadfast in repentance,
But how can I remain steadfast in repentance
when fast-breaking has routed the month of fasting?
When my nature has defeated the fasting month?
وَلاحَand appeared هِلاُلthe crescent الدُّجَىof darkness قَادِماًapproaching
بَقَايَاthe remainder مُحَيَّاهُof its face تَحْتَbeneath اللِّثَامِthe veil
And night's crescent appeared, approaching,
The crescent moon of nightfall arrives
the rest of its face beneath a veil.
With remnants of its illumination beneath the veil.

دَبِيبٌa creeping sensation تُسَارِقُهُyou steal it furtively فيduring الفِطامِweaning
So rise; let us drink it in the morning—pure wine with
So arise, we will receive it as a guest,
a creeping sensation you steal during weaning.
A creeping vine whose grapes we pick after weaning.
يطوفُhe goes around بهاwith it بَابِليُّBabylonian اللِّحاظِof glances
سَكِرْناwe became drunk بِعَيْنيهِon his two eyes قَبْلَbefore المُدامِthe wine
One with Babylonian glances carries it round;
The one with beautiful eyes circulates around it
we grew drunk on his eyes before the wine.
We were drunk with his eyes before the wine.
جَنَيْتُI inflicted harm علىupon خَصْرِهِhis waist مَاwhat جَنتْهُthey inflicted it
عَليَّupon me لَواحِظُهُhis glances مِنof سَقَامِsickness
I inflicted upon his waist what had been inflicted
I have won over his waist what his
upon me by his glances—sickness.
Glances had won over me of illness.
صَبَوْتُI yearned لَهُfor him وَزَمانُand the season الصِّباof youth
لَهُit has فيin النَّضارَةِfreshness عُمْرُthe lifespan الغُلامِof a boy
I yearned for him, and the season of youth
I poured for him while still in the days of youth,
has, in its freshness, the lifespan of a boy.
For him in blossoming there is the age of a lad.
رَعَىmay guard اللَّهُGod عَهداًan age مَضَىgone by لِلشَّبابِof youth
وَإنْand though لَمْdid not يُراعِhonor لناtoward us مِنany ذِمَامِbond of loyalty
May God guard a bygone age of youth,
May God maintain a covenant of youth now passed
though it honored no bond of loyalty to us,
Even if the reins are not held for us.
وَأَبقَىand may preserve لناfor us خُلْدَكَKhuldak الفائِزيَّal-Fa'izi
وأَبقَىand may preserve بهِthrough him طِيبَthe sweetness ذِكرِof remembrance الكِرامِof the noble
and preserve for us Khuldak al-Fa'izi,
And keep for us your everlasting eternity,
and through him preserve the sweet remembrance of the noble.
And with it the good memory of generous men.
