تَرَهَّبْتُI became a monk لَمَّاwhen أَنْthat غَداbecame اللَّحْمُmeat غَالِياًexpensive
وَرَهَّبْتُand I made a nun of عِرْسيmy wife فَهْيَso she لاnot تَتَزفَرُeats meat
I became a monk when meat grew expensive.
I became devout when meat grew expensive,
And made my wife a nun, so she eats no meat.
And I made my wedding frugal, yet she does not complain,
وَمِنand from طَرَفَيْهاher two ends تَشتْهِيshe craves اللَّحْمَflesh شَهْوَةًwith intense desire
وَلِلنِيِّand for the raw والمَطْبوخِand the cooked مِنّيon my part تَعَذُّرُinability
And from both her ends she intensely craves flesh,
And she craves meat intensely,
But I can provide neither raw nor cooked.
But she excuses me for lack of roast and stew.
