They swayed their figures and unsheathed their eyes,

and left bright swords and tawny spears idle.

They beguiled us one day and said, “What

you have is less than what we have.

You complain of sickness, while we have eyes

that, could they speak, would say, ‘You suffer as we do.’”

We said, “Then do they suffer something else?” They said, “Not

all your love is apportioned among us.”

“O lady of the beauty mark, may one not gaze upon

the anemone of your cheeks? May it not be plucked?”

She said, “Did you take it, because of the beauty mark,

for anemones? You have missed what is here.

My cheek is a rose; my saliva is its water.”

I said, “Ask one who has tasted, or one who has plucked.”
