زَفَفْتُI gave in marriage البِكْرَthe virgin مِنof مَدْحِيmy praise
زَفَفْتُ البِكْرَ مِن مَدْحِي
لِمَنto one who يُهْجَىis satirized وَلاand not يُمْدَحْis praised
لِمَن يُهْجَى وَلا يُمْدَحْ
I gave the virgin of my praise in marriage
to one who is satirized, not praised.
وَقَدْand indeed عَادَتْshe returned بِخَاتَمِهاwith her seal
وَقَدْ عَادَتْ بِخَاتَمِها
وَذَاكَand that البَعْلُthe husband مَاnot أَفْلَحْsucceeded
وَذَاكَ البَعْلُ مَا أَفْلَحْ
Yet she returned with her seal intact,
and that husband did not succeed.
